Kabuki

Kabuki: At this SCOS/ACSCOS conference the delegates are invited to experience the art form of kabuki (歌舞伎), a kind of theatre dance-drama with a lot of make-up. The etymologies of kabuki could both be traced back to a form of dancing and singing, as well as even more titillating meanings of being out of the ordinary, bizarre even, with roots in the red-light districts of Kyoto. Perhaps one could even say that this event breaks through the solemn and silent nature of wabi-sabi and allows us to explore the bizarre. In the break, we will have a bento box dinner.

Yakatabune (Tokyo Bay cruise)

Yakatabune: This year’s gala dinner will be on a boat. Indeed, Daisetz Suzuki wrote that "a simple fishing boat in the midst of the rippling waters is enough to awaken in the mind of the beholder a sense of the vastness of the sea and the same time of peace and contentment.”  We will not go on a fishing boat, but a yakatabune: a ship with traditional Japanese seating where we will enjoy food and good company. The boat will cruise the Tokyo Bay, with a view of skyscrapers, and the rainbow bridge. With our sensitivity to wabi-sabi, can we even find it in this setting?
